Hi all,

it seems like everyday I get a call to giveaway tickets on Expatica and the prizes just keep getting better and better! This may appeal more to UK expats in NL, as Eddie Izzard is well known in the UK, but I would recommend his show to anyone.

The promoters are supplying Expatica with 5 x 2 tickets (39 Euros each) for Eddie's live show at the Amsterdam Heineken Music Hall on Friday 13th November.

Usually we give tickets out to the first members to post in the thread until we run out. However, as this usually takes about half a day to be over and done with, I think in this case it's only fair to give more members a chance.

Here's what we'll do ... the first 20 usernames to post below requesting tickets will be entered into a draw. The Expatica office will then pick 5 of those usernames out of the hat and we will publish the winning usernames in this thread on Friday 30th October.

If fewer than 20 posts turn up then the better your chances ... but I wouldn't hold your breath

Family Solutions has coordinated a roundtable discussion to meet and speak with likeminded parties on the subject of expats and its developing research on the matter. They are holding this roundtable in the interest of effectively and purposefully harness the data on this diverse group for
meaningful application.

The goal of this meeting is to introduce interested parties or those involved in this effort, and to gain further knowledge on this group in a more cohesive manner than is already applied.

'fun' Dutch Course 2 weeks intensive

Hi Guys
Thought you might like to know I have just recently completed a 2 week intensive Dutch course as I felt I was missing out on the Dutch way of life and not being able to read things going around was driving me insane. The course was 'fun' and remarkably easier than I thought it would be. And do you know..........you hear the 'cloggies' say how hard it is to learn Dutch, well if this was true, then why do so many speak it in NL???Hello!!! Anyway, the tutor's name is Albert and is in a lovely part of Amsterdam with a terrace where you can chill out. Visit his site www.talencoach.nl thats fun too and register for his personal emails. Very positive! Good luck.
PS. Start the next course with him next week and then you wont be able to shut me up in DUTCH

USA Meets Europe: A Forum for Young Leaders
Next Weeklong Seminar (6th – 10th November 2009, Berlin)

The next Weeklong Seminar for “USA Meets Europe: A Forum for Young Leaders” will be taking place on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and therefore offers a unique opportunity for participants to experience this historic occasion.

The program will include lectures, seminars, and panel discussions with leading speakers from the fields of academia, politics, diplomacy, civil society, and the private sector. The event runs concurrent to the ICD program “A World Without Walls”, and the contributing speakers will include:

• Dr. Benjamin Barber (Professor, Maryland University, author of “Jihad Vs McWorld”)
• Ms. Ségolène Royal (2007 Presidential Candidate, French Socialist Party, President of the Poitou-Charentes Regional Council)
• The Rt. Hon. David Trimble (Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Former First Minister of Northern Ireland)
• Jack McConnell (MSP; Former First Minister of Scotland)
• Mike Kenneth Moore (Former Director-General of the World Trade Organization and Former Prime Minister of New Zealand)
• Annelli Jäätteenmäki (Former Prime Minister of Finland)
• Emil Constantinescu (Former President of Romania)

The topics under discussion will include:

• The history and development of transatlantic relations since 1989
• The process of European integration from political, economic, and cultural perspectives and the implications of this for US-European relations
• The current and future impact of the Obama administration on transatlantic relations
• Comparing and contrasting US and European approaches towards the Russian Federation and the importance of Russia in determining the nature of transatlantic relations
• The interdependent nature of the challenges faced by sovereign states and the challenges and opportunities this brings

Who can apply?
The program is open to students and young professionals with an interest in international relations and cultural exchange.

What will the Weeklong Seminar involve?
The program for the Weeklong Seminar will consist of lectures, seminars, workshops, and cultural activities in and around Berlin. The participants will meet with leading figures from the political, diplomatic, academic and civil society spheres to discuss the state of relations between Europe and the USA, and consider how they can be supported through organised cultural exchange.

The timing of the event will also allow the participants the unique opportunity to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall here in Berlin.

What is the aim of the Weeklong Seminar?
The Seminar aims to raise awareness of key issues in the transatlantic relationship, inform the participants about the field of cultural diplomacy and its importance today, create a sustainable network between the participants, and provide support and guidance for future initiatives.

What happens after the Seminar?
After completing the Weeklong Seminar, the participants become members of the USA Meets Europe Forum. They are then supported by the ICD in conducting research, organising and developing leadership initiatives, and are invited to join the ICD Online Forum where they can network with the other Young Leaders from around the world. The Forum activity is aimed at creating sustainable initiatives that bridge the Atlantic.

Volunteer for Expatica's "i am not a tourist" Fair 2009

Want to help other internationals and hang out with the globe-trotting Expatica team? Then why not volunteer for our "i am not a tourist" Fair 2009!

This year’s fair will have over 90 exhibitors to assist expats acclimatise to the Netherlands, while our more well-established guests can enjoy some great entertainment and mix with their fellow internationals.

Volunteer Schedule:

On the morning of Saturday, 24 October, we will assemble welcome bags for the fair and end with a free lunch in the Beurs cafe.
On the day of the fair, 25 October, we will need help in checking coats, collecting entrance tickets, handing out welcome bags, etc. The rotation shifts are 10:00-13:00, 13:00-15:00 and 15:00-17:00.

Both days will be a great way to meet and socialise with fellow internationals. In return for your help, you will receive a FREE lunch, FREE admission to one of our autumn events (to be planned) and a FREE Expatica (i am not a tourist) T-shirt!

Greetings to our American users,

On the 5th October 2009 the NCRV presents a humorous TV game show about the different cultures in the Netherlands. ‘De NL Test’ is a test with questions you do not dare to ask your neighbour, but you will know the answers.

TV production company MasMedia are looking for extrovert, cheerful American people for this programme. So if you are over 18 years of age, have a healthy sense of humour, are interested in different cultures and would like to share your knowledge about this in a test? The recording of the show takes place on September 28th 2009.

The public will play an important part in the programme. You are an active player because of the voting boxes used during the show.

Hello all,

The Amsterdams Uitburo are a collective marketing organisation for the cultural sector in Amsterdam. They are currently running a qualitative research project and are on the lookout for expats living in Amsterdam, who would like to participate in a focus group.

Participation will be rewarded with a Theater & Concert-voucher of EUR 25. The focus groups will be divided into three groups, singles (on the 24th of September), people who are part of a couple (on the 23rd of September) and people who are part of a family with children (on the 28th of September). All meetings will be between 7 and 9 p.m.

The Bengali month of Ashwin heralds our biggest annual festival Durga Puja - accompanied by the sound of the dhaak, beauty of the white Kaash Phool, notun sari-jama-kaporh, delightful cuisine, bangla gaan et all…Greetings to you and your family for this joyous season.

For all of us Bengalis in the Netherlands, like in previous years, once again this year after the culmination of Durga Puja we are organizing the Bijoya Sammelan.
