How has life abroad affected your finances and career?

Help us learn what expats think are the greatest challenges of managing work and personal finances abroad, especially during the recession.

Expatica and Ruigrok / NetPanel are inviting all expats to fill out a survey regarding the finance and labour markets in their current country of residence.

While one can read daily news about how economies around the world are sinking deeper into recession and affecting locals’ lives, information on how expats are coping is harder to come by. A short poll conducted by Expatica shows most expats have been affected by the financial crisis.

This survey hopes to address this through examining how expats have been affected by the global financial crisis, both professionally and financially. In addition, it will look at the differences and challenges foreigners might face in their careers upon moving abroad.

Survey questions include: “Have you changed your spending habits because of the global downturn?”, "To what extent are you positive or negative about your job prospects for the coming year?" and “Can you describe the ways in which working in your profession is different in your country of residence compared to your country of origin?”

The survey will run for two months and the results will be published in July.

Click here to fill out the survey. Survey participants stand to win a USD 25 Amazon.com voucher.

Tipps for cheap attractions

Hi guys, my name is Patrice and I've been living in London for 2 months. I'm a student (originally from Germany) and taking an internship at the moment. Living in London is great but quite expensive as well. I have already visited many attractions, but they're all too expensive !! :-/
I have already searched for discounts at the internet and I found www.discountbritain.net. I think it's pretty cool, you can get a discount (20 %) of each attraction or restaurant. The only thing you need to do is to print out the voucher. And there are some attractions in Germany as well :-). For example Aqua Dom & Sea Life Berlin.

So I hope some of you originally come from or lived in London and can give me more "insider-tipps", where it's cheap to go ?! (especially attractions)

I'm looking forward to hear from you !! :-)

Cheers!

Patrice

On 4 March, 2009, Down Under will host the official launch of 'Hunter', the latest book by Australian author and Hamburg resident Campbell Jefferys. The launch will include a reading and book signing and offer guests the chance to meet the author.

About the book:

Did the Australian government really bring known Nazi party members to Australia and protected them until their deaths? Having survived the horrors of the Eastern Front, Peter Fischer leaves post-war Germany behind and moves to Australia. 40 years later, Eric Messer is struggling to find his place at a new high school south of Perth. The two meet just before the Gulf War, sparking a strange friendship tainted by mistrust and half-truths, and complicated by a mysterious and overly friendly Austrian named Baum.
