Has life abroad affected your finances and career?

Help us learn what expats think are the greatest challenges of managing work and personal finances abroad, especially during the recession.

Expatica and Ruigrok / NetPanel are inviting all expats to fill out a survey regarding the finance and labour markets in their current country of residence.

While one can read daily news about how economies around the world are sinking deeper into recession and affecting locals’ lives, information on how expats are coping is harder to come by. A short poll conducted by Expatica shows most expats have been affected by the financial crisis.

This survey hopes to address this through examining how expats have been affected by the global financial crisis, both professionally and financially. In addition, it will look at the differences and challenges foreigners might face in their careers upon moving abroad.

Survey questions include: “Have you changed your spending habits because of the global downturn?”, "To what extent are you positive or negative about your job prospects for the coming year?" and “Can you describe the ways in which working in your profession is different in your country of residence compared to your country of origin?”

The survey will run for two months and the results will be published in July.

Click here to fill out the survey. Survey participants stand to win a USD 25 Amazon.com voucher.

Joining Expat Voices in Spain

What do you have to say about living in Spain?

Shopping, food, language, culture; what do you like most (and least) about living in Spain?

The Expatica team invites you to contribute to Expat Voices, a new Expatica feature which takes the form of a brief questionnaire. Don't be concerned if English is not your first language, let us know your thoughts.

To participate, you simply need to answer 10 questions by email and include a photograph of yourself.

You are also welcome to share an image or a video which conveys more about your life abroad.

We decided to launch Expat Voices after noticing how popular our expat interviews were with Expatica readers. We also noticed how willing our readers are to offer encouragement, tips or reassurance to newcomers via article feedback as well as on the Expatica Forums.

For instance, read what fellow drivers have to say about a writer’s experience of driving in Spain.

We hope that Expat Voices will give more internationals a chance to share their perspective on life abroad.

We'd love to hear what you have to say about Spain. To add your voice and receive the questionnaire, send an email to editorES@expatica.com with 'Please send me an Expat Voices questionnaire' in the subject line.

N.B. Expatica reserves the right to edit submitted material where necessary.

European Elections - Ex-pat Candidates

The candidate in the upcoming European elections for the CDL, the 'Centro Democratico Liberal' party, is Sean O'Curneen Cañas, half Irish and half Spanish. Fourth on the list, i.e. in a high enough position to make a difference, is Jacqueline Cotterill, a British long time resident of Spain and currently deputy-mayor of Parcent (Alicante). Jacqueline also works closely with the AUN, the anti property abuse association which had such success recently with the Auken Report into unlawful property abuse and corruption.
The CDL is the Spanish arm of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE), which is the Union’s third largest political force, with 100 MEPs, 9 of the 27 EU Commissioners, 5 Prime Ministers, more than 800 elected National MP’s and thousands of Regional and Local councillors.
I've interviewed Sean on the radio (link at http://www.coolfmspain.com ) and written it up at Spanish Shilling.
I see this as an opportunity for the 300,000 Northern Europeans who have registered to vote in Spain to actually make their vote useful - as the voice and experiences of an ex-pat in the European Parliament must surely be a good thing!
