Well, let me try to make this brief and to the point...

The scenario is we are considering moving to Amsterdam within the foreseeable future.

I am South African raised - and with my father being Dutch (moved to SA 30+ years ago) I have always only ever held a dutch passport, but have never lived in Holland.

My boyfriend has a UK passport, and is self employed, and even after our move he will most probably continue to work and earn in the UK.

From reading some postings on this website, I believe that a Dutch citizen has employment / social priority over other EU nationalities.
I am the stable (salaried) 'bread-winner' in the family, but I am concerned that this move might be quite tricky financially and for tax reasons because of my boyfriends employment status.

Also, are there any pitfalls due to me having never been a resident in Holland before?

I know every expat has their own particular set of circumstances (I uprooted from SA 7 years ago to live in the UK) but if anyone has some advice or similar experience they could share - I would be really grateful.

Have a wonderful day!

If you are a South African citizen (and it sounds like you are), you need to travel in and out of South Africa on a South African passport (regardless of whether you possess any other passport). You may get away with not doing this, but it is illegal and they are checking this more and more often.

You can both live here legally without work permits as you are both EU citizens.

Being Dutch, you qualify for social security benefits etc. Your boyfriend would probably be better off working and paying tax in UK as tax breaks are better there if you are independant. However, his ability to do this depends on the number of days he is resident in NL.

As a non-Dutch EU person, he is eligible for social security immediately, but this is at a much lower level than yourself until he is registered as living in NL for 5 eyars or more and contributes towards the Dutch social security pool for X amount of time. However, as he is British and working in UK, he can actually claim british social security (but not British and Dutch at the same time) even if he chooses to come to NL. It all comes down to where he is legally taxed and his offical tax status in NL - fully resident, partially resident or wholly non-resident.

Hope this helps a bit.
