Hi we are about to move to Belgium (2 weeks time!). I have a 6 year old Volvo my husband has a Japanese Toyota Landcruiser, where can we find the official site which might tell us how much this will all cost and what we have to do. If we try to sell our cars in the uK first, it looks like we will loose an awful lot of money so therefore more economic to keep them and take to belgium, also regarding insurance how do we get belgium insurance if your car is not registered there yet. thanks.

It is possible to bring a vehicle to Belgium tax-free as part of a household moving operation, but like all household items that you plan to import, it is necessary to prove that they have been in your possession for more than six months before your arrival in Belgium. Make sure you bring supporting evidence such as receipts or insurance papers.
As long as a car is being imported into Belgium from outside the European Union as part of a move to Belgium, no customs fees or taxes will be charged. If the vehicle is less than six months old, however, this is not the case.
You may drive with foreign plates in Belgium for one month as long as you register the car in Belgium and obtain a Belgian driver's license. All road taxes and circulation taxes will have to be paid, as with any car put on the road in Belgium (See Registering a Vehicle). If you have benefited from a tax exemption it is not permitted to sell your car within one year of registration. It is advisable to use a broker or specialised agent for more information.
Conformity to Belgian standards is another area for attention, especially if the car is from outside the European Union. For example, United States-specification cars will need alterations including white parking lights, adapting the speedometer to kilometers and stamping the chassis registration on the chassis. These changes should be carried out once the car has arrived in Belgium and not before. Once the adaptations have been made it is necessary to have the car checked out. Following a technical inspection, the Vehicle Immatriculation Center will issue a Certificate of Conformity. Once this has been done and the insurance taken care of you are ready to go ahead and apply for license plates and registration.
