Hi. I'm a dual US/German citizen studying here in Amsterdam. I tutor English on the side, and some clients have asked for an invoice (presumably for tax reasons). I'm happy to provide an invoice, of course - but how do I register this sort of business to make it legit? Do you think it is ideal to register this business in the US or the Netherlands? I'd appreciate any ideas, insight, or criticism. Thanks!

I would suggest for the best advice you should contact your local Chamber of Commerce.

From studying the KvK wesite, it looks like if you are working less than 20 hours a week at it, you can't register it as a business anyway. But it is ok to give English lessons without registering, as long as you declare the income on your tax return.

You don't have to register with the Chamber of Commerce. A teacher is exempted from this obligation (free profession).

Instead you may have to register your freelance activities with the tax office because you may have to charge VAT to your clients.
