Well i really dislike holland and my biggest complaints are:

1.) lack of space
2.) general everyday rudeness
3.) treatment of expats

so, we have decided to leave in due time (we will take our time and do it in a good way). We can go back to the US, but there are somethings I DO like about holland:

1.) Proximity to Europe
2.) General employer's attitude to employees (rules or not)
3.) LOTS of vacation time

So, unless I try to work at a college again, I am going to have a difficult transition to the US.
[note, I am an American citizen who speaks only English and bad Dutch]

The question then is, is there someone where else in Europe we can go?

We are (will be) married and he is an EU resident, so if we go within the EU can I work?

He hates the idea of the UK or Ireland, but is it so bad (and expensive)?

Denmark?

If he is an EU citizen, you can go anywhere, really. Check this out this website:

I have it bookmarked for future reference, but ultimately my Dutchie's heart is in the UK or Canada (but for the same reasons as you, and more, I'm pushing for the UK! <img src="../images/emoticons/yalaugh.gif">

I have noticed a lot of Dutch emigrate to Norway or Sweden.

Guess Southern Europe is nicer but hard to find work.

you have that book marked... LOL that is great!!!

And jim, I think one reason they go north is because they don't look so funny with their short jeans. (seriously, norwegian people are, i think, the nicest people on earth).

Thanks for the input. I was also sort of looking at noway, but the language IS a problem....

i totally agree with your complaints - and i only have been living in NL for the past 6 months. when my job assignment will be over (another 3.5 years to go ..... ) i really would love to move to Finland or Norway.

basically, you can chose from any country in within the EU and a working permit for you will not be a problem. in some countries however, it IS a problem when you don't speak the local language. generally, the further north in Europe you are, the more likely you are to get along with English, the more south you come, the more you are lost when you don't know the local language.

How about Copenhagen/Denmark?
Nicer people, more polite cyclists, English standards as good as NL.

There are some international companies in and around Copenhagen.

I have been considering Berlin, but Germans are a bit to formal, stiff and thorough for me.

I believe in a few years time some eastern European countries will be the place to go.
