Actually the one and only official language is Ukrainian. However many Ukrainians are not able to speak Ukrainian and many are bilingual. Generally it depends on your destination - the capital area is dominantly Russian, but you can forget your Russian in the country
Btw Russian is not sooo hard to learn. Most of the people are just in the beginning daunted by different alphabet. The modern language has lots of words borrowed form other European languages.
