My husband recently relocated to Amsterdam and I have been trying to get a job there as well. However, the job that I managed to get is in Dusseldorf.
I am new to Europe and I dont really know the distances and whether it is possible to drive between countries.
My husband and I are considering living somewhere in between, such as Arnhem or Eindhoven, and both of us will drive to our respective work places. I am trying hard to work out sthg better than a weekend-only relationship, but am not sure whether the daily commute is even feasible.
I would appreciate if anyone has any comments on driving between these cities or even about driving a rather long distance (abt 1 hr) to work on a daily basis.
Thanks in advance, Tara

Mmmm.....you need to buy a good map first! It is about 220 km between AMS and DUS.
I frequently drive for business between Duesseldorf and Amsterdam, and on a good day it will take 3 hours centre to centre; in the evenings 4 hours is not unusual. And in the winter if the weather is bad, it is far better to take the train.
The drive from Arnhem to Duesseldorf is probably a bit quicker (though the morning traffic into Duesseldorf can be hell!)- luckily it is fast autobahn for much of the way, with no speed limit from the border to Oberhausen.
I don't know where you are from, but if it is the USA, remember that gasoline here is generally 4 to 5 times more expensive than in the States, so travelling on a daily basis between Amsterdam and Duesseldorf will be expensive. I would suggest that a daily commute by car will be very draining (financially and physically), but it may be worth thinking about doing it by train.
A friend of mine used to commute daily between Amsterdam and Eindhoven until he moved down to Eindhoven - he was a wreck within a month! The drive from AMS to Eindhoven is at least 1.5 hours; sometimes a good bit more.

Fun gave a lot of good advice. I will also add that commuting by car for 1 or 2 hours (3, you must be kidding) here can be a nightmare compared to a similar commuting in the States. Who wants to drive where there is no speed limit? Believe me, I've been there and never want to go back!
On the other hand, I enjoy commuting by train -- but make sure you're in first class. The extra Euros are worth it! Get yourself a yearly reduction card. You might be traveling some during non-peak hours.
On a daily basis, between countries, by train?
There happens to be a direct train from AMS CS to Duesseldorf Hbf. 2 hours to get there, 2.5 hours to get back.
You wouldn't be able to buy tickets from the machines, you will have to go queue up at the booth...

You can buy a ticket from the machines nowadays.
However, traveling by train to Germany is ridiculoulsy expensive.
