Saw this somewhat later than most people: a funny and touching rejection of that longheld oxymoron, the german comedy.

I'd been expecting a genuinely groundbreaking film rather than just a well-told anecdote, but I'd still highly recommend it. Well acted and funny, touching in parts. The laughlines are at times telegraphed and the visuals self-indulgent, but solid method acting by bit-players (the father, the girlfriend) help to humanise the film's overwrought central conceit. The Yann Tiersen score is fantastic.

Tip: If you rent this on DVD, don't look at the trailer first - it's a spoiler that gives away the storyline and the best jokes.

I wanted to see this movie, I don't know if it's still on the screen.

Talking about the band "Yan tiersen", have you seen the movie "Amélie" (or "Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain"), they made also musically a good score in this one.

'Goodbye Lenin!' is still on at Cartoon's in Antwerp (10.00 pm).

I've only listened to a few albums of Yann Tiersen's stuff (amelie, GL, the black sessions and his website stuff) but he's good. As a multi-instrumentalist with an emphasis on minimalism, he's definitely similar to michael nyman/wim mertens, although I think he's closest to Clint Mansell's work with the Kronos Quartet (the Requiem for a Dream soundtrack). His website's excellent, btw, and I particularly liked his 'Black Sessions' live collaborations CD (Neil Hannon doing Bowie, Francoiz Breut).

I thought Good-bye, Lenin was okay when I saw it but I couldn´t understand why it had been advertised as hilariously funny.
Being a Westgerman I felt it was more of a movie for Eastgermans. There were a lot of old, eastern products in the film and I supposed many other things I didn´t even realize because I wasn´t raised in the DDR. I suppose the film must have evoked a lot of memories and was therefore funny for Eastgerman viewers a bit like the 70`s or 80´s shows.
What is funny or not is always very subjective.

But I would recommend seeing it because it´s also sort of a documentary film on everyday life in the GDR.
