I will be applying to the University of Amsterdam for the September 2010 start, and I was wondering the process to obtain a residence permit. The school website states that I have to make an appointment with the IND, but what is the procedure? Being American, I don't need a visa. Do I need any other supporting documents other than proof of sufficient funds? A police clearance certificate (since many other countries require these)? Health check?

For official information, see the site http://www.ind.nl/EN/verblijfwijzer/verbli...r=1&lang=en and click on the links there for more information.

You do not need a visa in order to enter the Netherlands, but you have enough time to apply for an MVV, which is optional for you. The advantage is that you will get an answer to your request before entering the Netherlands, and eventually get the right to work by default (foreign students are allowed to work 10 hours per week, but with an MVV you could get lucky and get the full right to work here).
