Full Version: can i claim unemployment benefit, and how much?

Hello, I am probably going to be made redundant from my job soon but am not sure if I am entitled to unemployment benefits, and if so, how much. I have heard that you get 70% of your previous gross monthly salary, but that there is an upper cap on this.

I have also heard that you need to have been employed in the NL for the last 4 years. i have been employed in the NL for the last 2 years, before that i was in london for 2 years, but before that I was in NL for 4 years.

If anyone knows what would happen in my situation, please let me know!

Many thanks.

your best bet is to visit your local CWI office. they give the most accurate advice. when i did this, i was told you have to have worked for X amount of weeks per year for 5 years or you would only qualify (as a foreigner) for 70 (or was it 75) % of minimum wage. as you've worked before, i don't know how that will affect you.

i'm kind of in the same boat. just been made redundant. so need to figure it all out. i'm getting lawyers to handle it for me this time as I just can't be bothered. also, my company will contribute 750 euros to a lawyer to assist me.

just remember, if you accept a redundancy pacakge, you may jeopordise your chances of claiming unemployment.

good luck in finding a new job

Do we have to pay tax on such unemployment benefit payments received from CWI or is the tax deducted at source from such payments by them ? Do you receive netto figure or brutto figure in your bank account ?If anybody have experience this , it would be nice to share the same to the forum.

I'm in the same boat.

I'm living in Wageningen, have worked for 11 months before being made redundant.

Only one month after being unemployed that I knew there is such thing as UWV for unemployment benefit. Then the following is what I have done

- Googled for CWI Ede (a town close to Wageningen)
- Called CWI Ede, and knew that CWI is now called UWV
- Was told to create a DigiD account and a profile on werk.nl, and an appointment with the Employment Coach.
- Went to www.werk.nl, create a profile that provides as information similarly to a CV
- Had problem with DigiD account (its key secret factor is the username, if you forget that you must wait for 20 days to have a new one. It sucks)
- Called UWV Ede, was told to come to UWV Ede
- Met a person who handed me an application form for the unemployment benefit (or uitkering in Dutch)
- Could not fill in the form alone, since my Dutch knowledge is very limitted, then went to UWV Ede again
- Was helped by a lady to fill out the form, the important things to them (UWV) seems to be "how active have you tried to find a new job". I myself have tried with more than 20 persons, I provided their name/phone/company names. So that's quite enough for UWV's satisfaction.
- I sent the form to UWV Arnhem, the one responsible for the money
- Went to the appointment with the Unemployment coach. It turned out to be that this coach could helped me just a little, but paid more attention on whether or not I have actively searched for a new job. I passed this "TEST" !!! since I had really difficulty with the Dutch job market.
- Was called by UWV Arnhem, the money body of UWV for my region. They seemed to check if I am of a real identity as provided by the application form or not. Then they ask me a "letter of dismiss" from my last employer. I said "No, It was only a dimissal meeting and I was told that my one year contract is not going to be extended". UWV Arnhem will send me a letter still asking for that, and I will have to answer in written that I don't have a letter of dismissal.
- Will wait 2-3 weeks before money being drawn into my bank account. The guy from UWV Arnhem did not answer me about how many months of benefit will I have.

Hope this helps

someone calculates what you get and how many months so that guy wouldn't know, he just checks for certain things to move it forward to the approver and calculator.
Further, I was told but not sure if it was a brush off that it is better to do it online vs on paper because it will go faster electronically. Even if it takes longer you will get backdated payments so you won't lose anything.

Sorry for your situation - hope it works out for you.

Umm you mean you were not 'dismissed'?They simply did not renew your temporary contract and that entitles you the the uitkerring? I am very surprised because I thought you had to explictly be 'dismissed' (fired) to collect the ww uitkerring.

Secondly, how long have you lived/worked in The NL? I ask because if you have only been here 11 months ... my understanding is that you will only get the bijstand which is 'public money' for 3 months .. and that's it.

You have to have paid into the system for a number of years before you get the ww uitkerring .. but maybe I am mistaken ...

Being enployed in another country .. does not mean a thing to the Dutch unemployment people. That doesn't make any sense actually.

All the Dutch people care about is how long you have worked (thus paid into) the unemployment system in The NL.

As I just mentioned above .. I'm pretty sure you have to have worked here 5 years ..or so. Other than that, you would only been entitled to that 3 months of pay. sad.gif

Sorry for your situation as well....

Incorrect. If your contract ends and it is not renewed, then you are entitled to unemployment. They have changed the rules a bit but it used to be if you worked 6 months you'd get it it for 6 months, now it is reduced to 3 months. What the qualifying period is today, I don't know. It might be 12 months but I don't think so, I think it is still 6 months.
As for welfare (bijstaan), you would ordinarily not be entitled to it unless you are a permanent resident or have contributed a certain amount over a certain period and with a minimum savings amount in your bank account. Too complicated and not something for you to be concerned with. Focus on unemployment only.

I can add some info as I just started getting benefits.

If you worked in NL for 2 years you should be entitled to 3 months.

My old salary was 52.500 per year, so I am entitled to the maximum amount per day - 189

Now, out of that - they only give you 75% for the first 2 months. So I get 139

Now, out of that they take 8% vacation money to be set aside. I will get that next May, or when I stop receiving benefits.

Now, out of that they take 41.75% in tax.

So, I get about 1638 per month netto at the max rate.

Next month will be my 3rd month, so the amount I get drops from 75% to 70%!

So ... you get 75% of your salary the first 2 months and 70% the third month .. and that's it - right?

Yes. I have been working in NL since 2006, however, since my Dutch wife is my sponsor I am only entitled to the 3 months of ww. After 3 months ww goes onto a Social Benefit Scheme - thus I am unable to get those as I cannot collect public funds. So, 75%, 75%, 70% - then that's it.

Now, I can CLAIM additional benefits - meaning for a longer period, but then the IND has the right to cancel my RP.

But frankly, I am making only a fraction of what I made working, so I HAVE to find something out there.

Yeah, same for me. Have worked 11 months before I was unemployed.
UWW then answered me with 75%, 75%, 70%.

There is some thing wrong with their calculation. My brute salary was 3100, but they say that my "dagloon" (=daily wage) was only 108.69.

It sucks. Yes it sucks. Whenever I deal with any one in the Netherlands, there is a probability that this person (regardless he is an individual or a staff from a government) rips me off. The Chief Financial Officer of my previous company tried to cheat me with the money he payed me more than 2 times. Now I have my doubt if the tax he made in my salary sheet is correct or not. But I don't know how the tax is calculated.

Oh, I hate being in the Netherlands: I don't know the language (although learning), people are much less honest than the European level, and the administration and service quality are so poor.

It is nice that there is you who post details.
I would try to understand this.

Your 52.500 Bruto Yearly salary is divided by 260 days (52 weeks * 5 days per week). Then it is 201.92 Euro per day. So why did you only get 189 per day?
