Hello,

I was told yesterday that my contract is not going to be extended (doh!) and it finishes on the 1st of August. I have several holidays planned and paid for to go overseas in August.

I am unsure whether or not to apply for the unemployment benefit before I travel as someone told me you cant leave the country while on it? I have worked here for 2 years on two contracts (one 18 months) so I qualify but not sure what to do now.

Does anyone know about the law regarding the unemployment benefit and travel?

Thanks,
J

Normally they want to see you every week which is what makes it difficult to go on holiday. With anglophones, they tend to back off and not need to see you except for once a month. You are supposed to tell them when you go on holiday but it is a pain in the ass.
I suggest you apply and push for an appt just before you plan to leave.

Keep in mind that you won't get much in the way of allowance.

I worked here for three years. However, the way the law works, my contract would have had to have ended as of 31 Dec in order for my final year to count towards calculating the allowance (for me, because of my age, 22 months worth, I think). You have to finish the whole year. Because my contract ended 1 October, the entire 2008 didn't count and I was only eligible for three months worth of allowance because they only counted two years worth of employment.

So since your contract ends in August, the entire 2009 may not count at all when calculating your allowance...

That being said, you don't have to answer to the UWV for that long as a result either...

Schooling
Additional schooling may be necessary to increase your chances of finding work. You can attend a training course or study programme while keeping your benefit. You require UWV’s permission to do so and may attend a study programme for a maximum of one year. You must start applying for jobs again two months before the end of the study programme.

Fascinating. I asked about that and was told there was nothing they could do.

I will assume it's because I only had three months worth of benefits.

that doesnt make sense. You have to have a contract that fills the whole year?Something wrong there.

If you want the year the contract ended to count towards your entitlement. I was three months off from getting almost two years worth because my contract ended in October (even though I worked three full years). Therefore, I received THREE.

That's simply not true. You were only eligible for 3 months benefits because you only worked 3 years. If you had worked 4 out the past 5 years, then you would have received the extended benefits, based on one month benefits for every year you had worked.

It's all right here in black and white.

I'm only repeating what the Dutchie told me when he researched it.

At any rate, the OP would only get three months at the most as well.

I would get your skates on and get down there immediately and register. At least then you're in the system (cos they take forever, and no doubt now are overworked with all the lay-offs) before you go off on holiday.
They might give you the runaround, but don't forget, if you worked, you paid the premies!

Actually, I think you have to register online...You don't have to wait too long for your first payment...less than a month...an interim 2-week thing to get you through...

Ummm I am 99% sure that you will only get 3 months pay in any case - which is called the Bijstand I believe.

I think you get this only if you get fired though .. not if your contract does not get renewed. That tells me you have temporary contract.

Not getting your contract renewed does not mean you are getting fired.

Everyone gets this at first .. and then later they get the WW as mentioned in the above link but the only way you can get the WW is if you carry a Dutch passport or have a Dutch Permanent Residence Permit .. both of which you can get after living here 5 years.

The thing is, you have to work here long enough to have paid into the WW system.

Someone did a nice writeup on how this all works in one of the threads here a while ago. Maybe he will pop in and explain.
