Hi,

I have a car and the MOT has expired, I have parked in private parking until I have the money to get the welding done to get it through the MOT and am currently using public transport.

However, I have heard that I can still get fined for having a car without an MOT even though the car isn't on the road, or even parked in a public place. Is this correct?

Thanks

You are supposed to apply for SORN at the dvla web site
It means exactly what you are doing, it is off the road.
However being in Holland, it dont'see what the dutch authorities have anything to do with it. Is it a Dutch licensed car or UK. Because UK uses MOT and NL uses APK

Hi MVN,

Sorry, I confused my question a little by referring to APK as MOT. It's a dutch car and the APK has expired.

Do you know if I am still able to get fined even though the car is being stored privately? Is there a dutch version of SORN? (The car is currently taxed and insured, it's only the APK that needs to be done, but it might be a few weeks before this happens),

Thanks

I dont know the dutch system which is why I kept my uk car out of it.
I suggest you call the motor vehicles people here and ask them if you can keep your car off the road like the UK Sorn.

Yes, it is possible to "schors" (i.e. suspend) your vehicle. This will not only relieve you of the APK obligation but also of the road tax (if longer than 3 months). It costs 68 euro to do though.

You can do this online (https://burger.rdw.nl/Diensten/Schorsen/Pages/schorsen.aspx) or at the post office. The online service is in Dutch, but maybe Google Translate can help.

Apparently you will automatically receive a fine if you do not "schors" your car but have an expired APK.
