How serious was the error??? The most you can likely get here is perhaps a refund of whatever you paid (after several years in court!), but there is little chance of suing for negligence here... same goes for doctors, unfortunately.....this is a land of no accountability....

I just learned that my vet forgot to tell me that my dog needed a serious heart medication after her ecogram - five months later, a fill-in vet reviews the file and discovered the error! Not even an apology, just a "what a shame that happened"...... *sigh*

Thank you very much for your aswering. My English is not so good. so I do not know you understand my bad vibes...

My cat had difficulty starting urination, urine odor is storong and colior is reallyu orange. But the just perform urinalysis every week, it doesn't perform a blood test and no echocardiography.
They said he was health. But The pain made him scream.

So I went to vet a few month with my cat but they said he was healthy. Then I went to the second opinion vet, they said he had stone in the ureter, then he gave us the Roycal Canon health food. I back to the home vet I ask them again because I do not know what's kind of stones he had and I am afraid it is already past a few month. But the vet said I just give this foods.
my cat ate this food and after a few days, my cat lie down exhausted at the floor when I went home. I went to emergency hospital but he progressed to kidney failure already. My cat stay in the hospital a couple of days.

After that I directory went to the home vet, he said he checked my cat. But the vet had operation (not a blood test and no echocardiography), and cut and look, cat and look... so vet cut up my cat. Of cause vet called me but he said he found stones.

After that my cat got shocked too much and he suffer some sort of trauma... He doesn't want to meet to the people anymore. I show him carry box or some one comes to my house, He drools copiously and take breaths through the mouth.
....And I paid emergency hospital about 1000 euro and I must oparation fee 700 euro. But he did not write operation fee, this was just medication fee.

Of course my cat get better so I must appreciate. But I knew my cat feels sick. If the vet check more carefuly, my cat was just treated through medication or he doesn't need to go to the emergency hospital or might not have operation...

This is story. I really want to know this result is best way or not.

Then, I found Dutch words "Dierenadvocaat". Is this lawyer of animal ???

Regards,
ratkat
Sorry to hear about your troubles....I know how upsetting it can be.

I am not aware of any dierenadvocaats - I would imagine any legal work regarding animals would be handled by a regular lawyer, as it is essentially a dispute between you and the vet - but like i said, there is very little legal possibility when doctors/vets make mistakes - this is one of the scary things about the Netherlands - lack of accountability/responsibility.

You can try to call the Juridische Loket, which offers "free" legal advice (but costs 10 cents/minute to phone!) - they may at least be able to tell you if you have any options =

Good luck and "sterkte" (strength)

If you have any Dutch or Dutch-speaking friends/colleagues, maybe see if they can call on your behalf??

Come on ratkat, surely you know by now it's not possible to have Dutch friends & even if someone has a Dutch colleague, asking them to phone somewhere is way too much trouble.

Hehe - that's why I also said Dutch-speaking ;-)

Hogetsu, I wish you luck, but consider letting it go - incompetence and negligence is kind of normal here - and I've seen much worse cases of it where absolutely nothing could be done. Accountability doesn't seem to exist here in the way it does in other places. I guess that's also part of their "job security"...

Hi,

In Den Haag, there is an established Veterinary Disciplinary Board. It is an independent judicial body, where you can go if you have a complaint about the veterinary treatment of your pet, livestock or poultry. You can only complain if your own interests are directly affected, so if you are the owner of the treated animal or the animal control.

About who can you complain? About the veterinarian, but also about the veterinary assistant. Or about an animal gynecologist or an animal physiotherapist. Your complaint may be about errors in giving or prescribing medication, a wrong treatment that your pet is suffering damage to his health or dies. But also about refusal to treat the animal or a refusal to allow the animal to come to the clinic.

The treatment of your complaint by the Veterinary Disciplinary Board will not result in sentence of the veterinarian for a compensation. The Disciplinary Board will give the veterinarian a warning, reprimand or a fine. As applicable. The Disciplinary Board may also suspend the veterinarian or deny him the power to continue to work as a veterinarian. By a ruling of the Disciplinary Board, people get recognition that the veterinarian has made a mistake. With the ruling of the Disciplinary Board in hand, you can claim compensation, if necessary in the ordinary civil courts.

The address of the
Veterinary Disciplinary Tribunal (is)
PO Box 90426
2509 LK Den Haag.

The complaints are treated free of charge. If you do not agree with the decision of the Veterinary Disciplinary Board, you can still appeal against the Professional Veterinary College. This is a period of two months after the date of dispatch of the decision of the Disciplinary Board.

What can you do if you have a complaint about the veterinary treatment of an animal that is not yours? The Veterinary Disciplinary Board will declare inadmissible because you are not directly interested. You can use the complaint to the complaints officer of the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature Management and Fisheries.

Complaints officer is also the Director of the Veterinary Department, so the full address is: The official complaints, Director Veterinary Service, Ministry of Agriculture, Nature Management and Fisheries, PO Box 20401 to 2500 EK Den Haag. These complaints officer is still responsible for your complaint to be submitted to the Veterinary Disciplinary Board. As an complaints office, he is also admissible.

If you have questions about a veterinary treatment or on other matters, you are welcome to the free hour of law firm Visser cs, every Monday from 17 to 20 hours at the address Hoofdkade 108 te Stadskanaal (near the Buinersluis)).
