Arrggg after 8 years in Holland my social life(what is that?) don't exist...maybe it's lost somewhere, or taking holidays in some tropical island leaving me here alone and thinking that I have to do something to improve my social skills!!
Let's face it...it's not easy to find friends when you are in another country, you don't have family here and...to speak the language is almost mission impossible. Maybe is my cultural problem ...I'm Portuguese! We like to talk ,share, be outside and I was just talking with my colleagues about the celebrations of the Saints in Portugal(Santo Antonio e Sao Joao) where everybody go outside in the evening to eat sardines drink and socialise with everyone who pass in the street. No one have afraid to ask if he/she can seat in your table because everybody is welcome!
I miss my group of friend, I miss the dinners out, the dancing in the cute bar in Lisbon by the river, or going out only for a coffee just for the fun!!
I'm 39 old rag, that hope that someone in Den haag or Voorburg area decides to read this.
I know that there is groups of expats in this area but they are not so easy to find.
So if you live in DH or Voorburg area, have sense of humour, and wants to go for a coffee(man or woman doesn't matter, is only to go out), be my guest and nock on my door...or send me an email it's up to you biggrin.gif

Cheers/groetjes/saudacoes/....

Don't give up.
I just re-found my social life, ironically with a bunch of dutchies smile.gif
Look for dutch groups that you share interest with.
My interests... are a bit different, so for me the culture tends to be very foreigner friendly smile.gif

Hey ladies, what's this old rag talk? C'mon now!

I'm 31, hopefully not an old rag, in Leiden. I don't speak Portuguese unfortunately, but I am definitely up for making friends.

Send me a private email if you're interested in chatting a bit. wink.gif

Hey,

I just arrived in Den Haag from New York City/Philadelphia. We have a similarily open culture there, too -- just make friends on the spot. I also noticed that a lot of the "natives" aren't too friendly to strangers. Nevertheless, in a short amount of time I've managed to at least make some new acquaintances.

Drop me a line over Expatica.

Dear,

It is also 8th year of mine. Yes, I got exactly same feeling as you. ..
I want to go home though no one believes.
Somehow,,, I often asked myself a same question:
If you get the world one day but you can't share your experience/happiness with someone, would you still feel happy?

Good luck

First of all thank you for all your feedback to my topic.

I think after some time we get use to our solitude and the social skills just get less accurate than before. I have to say that i like to have my silence and most of the times i arrive at home so tired that what i want is lay down in the sofa eat something and go to bed. The fact that I do 110 km every day by car and get all the traffic to Amsterdam don't help as well! And of course I have my child with me in the weekends. I know that you ask at this moment...why I'm complaining then? Well sometimes i would like to have a talk besides working related for example! To have someone to share a coffee and a good laughter! I know that I'm not 20 as well, and the good times of dinner out and go to dance till morning with my healthy crazy group of Friends are over, and after 22h00 is already late for me(arrggg getting old sucks)...but once on a while why not?

Anyway I'm not looking for love relations...I decided to become celibataire...well at least i will try it tongue.gif
