From a few months ago, I went to VET to check my cat health problem.
The VET said he is fine, but I can not believe it and I went to the second opinion. But the second opinion is also same answering.
But he had problem and went to the emergency hospital last month. next day, I went to VET again and the VET said he is fine again, but I could not believe it and I went to the second opinionagain. The 2nd VET said he is "a little bit" problem and he gave only diet foods 2 weeks ago ohmy.gif .
Then last Wed, he almost died and I went to emergency hospital again. VET said he was really bad and he was in there for 2 days and he had a miraculous escape from death. But the cost is about 500 euro sad.gif .
Then I took my cat to the 1st VET directory from emergency hospital. The VET checked my cat again and he had operation! The cost is almost 700 euro sad.gif .
Now he is getting better, but I can not convince from deep in my heart. If the 1st VET and 2md VET checked him better carefully, he did not have a difficult time angry.gif and I did not pay much money dry.gif .
In this case, do we compelled to accept about the 1st VET and the 2nd VET ? Or can I consult an expert ?
If you have same problem, could you plese let me know?

I don't think there's anything you can do now, but I would certainly look for a new vet. If you're in Amsterdam, I would highly recommend= http://www.dierenkliniekdewetering.nl/

I found our previous vets had not been checking for things that should be checked in older cats and it possibly resulted in an earlier death than if diagnosed in time - the vet we now use is great, thorough, pro-active and caring, which are rare qualities in NL. Of course, this has resulted in us spending more money because they found things that need treating that the other vet didn't.

I don't know how old your cat is, but you may want to consider pet insurance.

This VET said my cat IS FINE, they could NOT find my cat problem longer than 3 months. And they operated my cat on leaving the emergency hospital !
Then I went to the other Europaplein VET (2nd opinion)l. They said he is a little bit problem but they do not check carefuly and they sold about diet foods.

My cat has just been 7 years old.

If these VET checked more carefuly, my cat did not need to have oparation at all.

Why do I have to pay total 1000 euro after all this ???

I would like to know about inquiry counter for VER medical error.

I guess it depends on what was wrong with the cat? We had a cat a few years ago who started losing hair and getting weak over time. He started as a big long haired cat, ending up a nearly bald thin cat. He had numerous blood tests/examinations and had been vaccinated against everything.

When we moved over here my son brought him over by plane and he was still unwell, but even 2 vets here couldn't work out why, even though they did various tests and tried various medications.

One day he just sat crying and I ended up in Belgium having to call the vet out at night. He took some blood and realised immediately that he was hardly alive really, he had leukemia. But, all other tests hadn't shown anything like this previously.

When he first became ill, years before I had woken up one morning and my skin was in a terrible state and I ended up at the GP surgery. The day before this the farmer had been spraying his fields with god only knows what. My cat had obviously been wandering in those fields. I'm sure that whatever caused my cat to become ill initially was whatever was sprayed on those fields? since we both got ill. I just got bad skin, but he got bad skin and much worse consequences happened.

I'm sorry you went through this, but in the Netherlands, it is almost impossible to get any reimbursement from negligence or missing a diagnosis. I know people who have family members that died of treatable cancer simply because the huisarts called it "niks" and wouldn't refer them on for testing - those same huisarts are practicing today without the slightest discipline blink.gif

If you went to the vet I recommended, I am surprised, as they always run loads of tests (but ask me first if I want to do it, since it does cost extra). I have recommended them to several friends, and they were all very pleased. I often joke that I wish my own medical care was as good as my pets.

Just be happy your cat is better and try not to obsess over the money. In the future, perhaps try to be more pro-active and ask/demand tests (but be prepared to pay for them). Also, consider pet insurance to help lighten the blow when your cat gets older - I got it for my other pets after spending thousands during my cat's final year - soon after, my dog started needing treatment and it's been very useful as it reimburses a large portion of the costs.

I know it's frustrating when these things happen, but as far as I know, there's not much you can do about it and I know from my own experience, it's better to let it go, move on and construct a strategy for the next time. Good luck...

I was shocked at the prices of treatment mentioned. I don;t know if its because I'm out in the sticks but my vet is very cheap. We have had so many things done with pets in the last few years, An example would be my cat going in for the day, having a general anasthetic, having her teeth cleaned and my husband collecting her at 6pm. It cost like 35 euros.

Even a hip replacement op here is 1500 euros because we were speaking about it with our vet recently.

In my case, he drank water too much and he scream whole day and night. he had difficulty starting urination. And also he has sneezing problem. The VET said there is no correlation between urination and sneezing.
Then I went to the 2nd opinion, they said he has some virus and he had injection of antibiotics. But he had painful when I touch his back. Then after 2 weeks, his urination did not come. I took him to emergency hospital because it was on Sunday. He had injection of antibiotics and pain killer. The VET gave me pain killer and she said I should go to the home VET next day. I called VET next day, they said I only bring urination. But he had difficulty starting urination but I got it and gave it. VET said his urination is clean. So I took him to VET, they
just listened with a stethoscope and he is no problem. Then his urination comes again but he had painful. I went to 2nd VET. VET anaesthetize him and check his nose as camera and urination. VET said nose is no problem but pH is 7.5 and a little bit blood in urination. But VET gave me only Royal Canon diet plan. I do not like this because it is a lot of Karium and the Karium is not good for kidney. I said about it but they just say I just give him. I wnt to 1sr VET but it is same. I gave him this food. Then he almost die. I took him to emergency hospital, the VET said his kidney has damaged. He was in emergency hospital 2 night and I went to 1st VET, he took blood at least. Exam is fine, but he checked very carefully and he found big crystal and my cat was operated by him.
I am from Japan. Japanese VET is exaggerated response?I know. But if the cat has urination problem, Japanese VET has urination and blood test at the same time. Then if he has problem, the VET checks X-ray or CT because uremia is danger.
In this case, he is lucky because he did not have uremia.
But what did it mean I went to VET many times? Why did he has operation ??? Why they leave untreated????What's early detection, rapid cure?

sounds like they weren't talking your situation seriously. Poor thing, so he had a blockage causing him all this pain, must have been in agony.
Like ratkat mentioned, getting recompense here is usually a nightmare, I have no clue about how to go about dealing with a vet, you would have to get legal advice.

But, if they are like the usual people I have met here in the past in offices, they usually stick together like gum to protect themselves and each other.

You could.... just a thought... write a letter to the vets. Explain how much pain the cat was in and why you brought him (briefly, short explanation) then wri everything thatappened and how you feel they not only let you and your cat down in an emergency, but also, how shocked you are at having this very large bill! you have nothing to lose, maybe they will make the bill slightly smaller? I mean there is no harm in asking?

tell them how upsetting this whole situation has been especially as you have been told numerously that the cat was ok.

You could try that idea?

I hope your cat is recovering well now? ON a plus side, at least he has you as an owner, thank goodness and not someone who doesn't care about his/her health.
