Hi Everyone!

Everyone's favourite time of year...doing your taxes. Quick question...can you do it from NL or do you have to go back to Canada to file your annual taxes?

Cheers!

You can buy and download Quicktax from http://www.quicktax.intuit.ca. From here you can print off or electronically send your tax forms.

Just because you live in the Netherlands doesn't mean you don't have to pay taxes in Canada. Depending on your income and things like assets in Canada, amount of tax you pay in the Netherlands vs tax you would have to pay in Canada you may very well owe taxes in Canada. The only way to avoid this is to complete a form and submit to the Canadian government (can't remember what it is called) that indicates you are no longer a resident in Canada (don't worry, doesn't affect your passport!). To prove this you have to show you don't have property, income, etc in Canada.

I wouldn't skip doing your taxes in Canada out of convenience. If you ever go back to Canada and have to file taxes there will be a big hole in your history and likely an audit to follow.

The form is called NR73and is ONLY TO BE SUBMITTED IF REQUIRED BY THE REVENUE CANADA. There are international accountants in Canada that could help out with it. Personally, I would rather have it done professionally with the right person. There could too much at stake.
