Hi-

I've been in Amsterdam for almost 3 years now and I am still looking for a good GP. I am looking for recommendation from other expats here for a GP.

I am looking for a GP

- who will NOT send me back home for everything with just paracetamol, but actually try to cure the probelm,
- who will NOT ask me what I think the problem is but actually provide a sound diagnosis.

As I leave in the south of Amsterdam, I would especially welcome recommendations for GPs in Oud-West, Baarsjes, Oud-Zuid.

Thanks in advance for your help! I know there's gotta be a good one somewhere out there...

Dear all,

can you recommend a GP in Pijp? and do you happen to know how I can register with another GP? i am registered in GP in Pijp for 2 years, but she treats me like I am insane. she doesnt believe that I have a pain and the fact that I lost 10 kilos without the reaon in 3 months doesnt ring a bell for her at all.

thank you so much for any suggestions!!!

Ca you pls tell the medical cenre in Jordaan contacts? was trying to find in the internet, but unfortunately nothing...

I can not reccommend a GP at the Pijp and I don't know the details of the doctor in Jordaan BUT when eventually you find a doctor have your thyroid thoroughly checked. I had the same thing 3 years ago, was loosing weight while I was eating like a pig, I was convinced I had cancer and my GP was attributing it all to stress and my head etc. Finally, he did a basic blood test that of course showed nothing and then he was even more convinced I am hypochondriac etc.

i got a thorough thyroid test in my country ( not only T3 and T4 but also for autoantibodies and indeed I had a quite high number of autoantibodies. Something like autoimmune thyroiditis. In the end, I did not have to take any medicines for that but as often the case with autoimmune things this was a flare up and was getting even worse with all the stress I had that I am really ill. Once I knew the reason I calmed down and after a few weeks the symptoms also stopped.

Thank you Alvin, i will try to convience my doctor to do those tests here, because its very expensive in my country and since i have the insurance, why I shouldnt use it? i also was thinking that the reason might be hormons or something, because the breast pain (also checked here and the doctor told I am OK...I think its a different story with those doctors here).Just feels you need to survive here like in Afrika, read the medical books yourlsef, speak to people. because nobody from doctors will help you. only the reanimation is good here!

I used to use them - unfortunately one of them (I can't remember), I am very angry with them as they wouldn't prescribe medicine which is normal in most countries, which usually gives better outcome 95% of the time (according to "statistics") - result = lifelong medical help needed. They said the medicine was too "strong" and that the complaint would go away on its own. When it didn't, they simply said "Oh, that shouldn't have happened" and looking confused..... blink.gif

I have spoken to many other medical professionals here, and apparently with this ailment, they are trained to not treat it, though my current huisarts said she would have prescribed if ASKED. Anyway, be careful, even with recommended doctors!

Hi,

Should I laugh or cry? Another friend just recommended the same GP (on Overtoom). Thought I better google them before I go. :-)
And I need one urgently. I think I'm gonna be adventurous and try'em out.

One thing I don't understand though ... the Dutch have their lives perfectly organized, except for the healthcare system. Why o why.
And indeed, I agree with Sonia:
- Paracetamol cures everything
- The things Paracetamol doesn't cure get better without intervention
- If not, you have bad luck, and they recommend you try Paracetamol. That might help :-)

Specialists DO exist. Somewhere. You never get to see them though.

Cheers, and good luck to all of you, looking for THE GP in Amsterdam

A GP is a very personal thing. Everyone has their own approach to health and their own speicfic needs. In some countries they will prescribe antibiotics for anything- and some they wont, and so on and so forth.

I have lived here 8 years. I have to say I didn't trust my first GP, for good reason and changed. I now have a very good GP. But what makes her good? She listens, she responds to my needs, and she refers as needed. BUT she expects something of me that none of my Canadian doctors ever did (and I had very good doctors there). AND it is only because I became I mother that I understand it. I am responsible for my health, and I define what that is, and what I need and want.

So in answer to a good doctor in the Jordaan. I have one. I trust her, but more over- she trusts me. Its my body, I should know what is up with it.

I also use Dr Eric Cambridge and have had great luck with him for medicine, referrals to the hospital for further tests, etc. He is now located in the Jordaan / Oud-West at Bloemgracht 112. Phone 0204275011

May I ask why not? am also looking for a decent GP in Amsterdam...

okay - reading through these emails is dismal indeed. I, also, am looking for a GP as well as being pregnant with #2 child and anxious about the birthing treatments here (hospital or midwife both have bad reputations). My first baby was delivered by midwife (without pain killer) in North Carolina and it was actually quite wonderful! But I hear nothing of the kind here - only horror stories. I am so far registered with Sint Lucas Andreas Ziekenhuis for the birthing.

So, I am in des Baarsjes. Do I try the doctors recommended above, on Overtoom?

Why ? this is such a tricky subject. i also have been discouraged by my huisarts. I rarely go and the last time I was feeling miserable she said you have a virus, it will take 10-14 days, just be good to yourself. She never touched me. It's been 11 days, ... I want a doctor who will help me consider bio identical hormones if anyone has any ideas.
