Coming soon to a restaurant near you ...
Los Pilones,
1e Anjeliersdwarsstraat 6,
1015NR AMSTERDAM (Jordaan).
Just noticed the ad and thought it'd be worthwhile sharing here.

Cool, I just ate at LP1 tonite - they're always pretty busy and need more space, so sure, why not a new restaurant?? I just wish it was closer to my house.....maybe I should move to the Jordaan soon..

I'll be trying the LP1 for the first time soon. For those who have had Mexican food in America (Western areas, especially)..how does it compare?

Los Pilones is pretty good (I prefer the new one in the Jordaan - more space/comfortable), though with a limited menu selection and pricey when compared to the US (8 euros for 3 small flautas, ouch - and a few pitchers of margarita will set you back over 100 euros!) - no, it will not be the best Mexican you've ever had, but it's certainly the best I've found in Europe. It is not Tex-Mex, so if you're craving hard-shelled taco's and "chimichungas", Taco Shop on Amsteldijk is the place to go. These 2 places helped satisfy my Mexican cravings to a degree, though I've recently started making my own corn tortillas and enjoying the joys of "home cooking" ;-)

Just an update. I tried Los Pilones and on a scale of 1 to 5, I'd give it a 3.
It's just not Mexican food here. I don't think you can find it anywhere in the NL. If you want Mexican food, go to where you enjoy it most!

For me, that's California.

I love Mexican food (although I haven't tried the above mentioned restaurant) and I agree - best Mexican food to be found in California. Some years back I ate at a small family run Mexican restaurant in Cambria (Northern California) and it's one of the best meals I ever had - still remember it now!! I did try Rose's Cantina in Amsterdam some years back - it was okay, the atmosphere was buzzing but the food was nothing special.

Being from California myself, I love Mexican and Tex-Mex food and it is certainly something I miss, especially the variety and low-priced options available. You could probably go to a different Mexican restaurant/cafe every night of the year and most would be good!
When I recommend places like Los Pilones or Taco Shop, it's more that it is the closest acceptable thing to be found in Amsterdam (and perhaps Europe!) and better than nothing (which is what was available many years ago). Rosa's Canteen has been around a while but I found it "niks" and way over-priced to boot.
