Those from the states can probably commiserate. My husband and I were big fans of buffalo wings back home and we have had no luck finding any since our arrival. Anyone know of place that serves American style hot wings with the proper kick of spice? Anywhere in the country accessible by train would do, just so we can scratch that monthly itch. tongue.gif

Have you looked at Hard Rock Cafe? I am not sure about chicken wings, but I sometimes go there when I am in the mood for American food. I really like their potato skins and alfredo.

I haven't tried them. HRC isn't a place I would normally ever go in the states but it might be worth a shot for a taste of home. The Dutch make a good effort at the "hot chicken" but something isn't quite there. I think it might be the lack of vinegar. Good hot wings should be able to sting your sinuses at 10 paces. wink.gif I'll have to check to see if the HRC has a menu online.

Thanks for the suggestion.

A few years back we used to get them on a Friday at Dixies in Stadsplein, Amstelveen.

I can't see them on the current menu, but they may have been a bar snack or you might like something else on the menu.

They do have them at HRC. They aren't my favorite, but from my experience, I'm not too picky when I am jonesing for wings.

What I do is import a ton of hot sauce from the U.S. whenever I am there. I also ask anyone visiting to bring some. Then I cook my own kipkluifjes, purchased from Albert Heijn. I find that pouring a little olive oil into a frying pan, throwing the wings in, and flipping 'em around for 15-20 min., putting 'em on a plate, and throwing on some wing sauce is just what the doctor ordered.

I get gallon jugs of Frank's Hot Sauce. I forget the exact price, but it's somewhere around $12. Then I usually pour it into some smaller, leak-proof plastic bottles and throw 'em into a checked bag. Lasts for some time.

Frank's Hot Sauce is the best. My dad has a restaurant with locally famous wings and his main ingredient in his secret sauce is Frank's Hot Sauce. I've always talked about opening a wing place in the UK where my husband is from, and hey, there might be the need right here in Holland. Anyone have any other cravings from back home? I just got back from the states this week and I brought the usual 2 jars of Kraft Real Mayo and some ranch dressing spice packets. My husband really wants some jalapenos, so I've ordered seeds from the UK. I also brought other cool US stuff like some magic erasers, clorox anywhere, and goodies headache powder. My suitcases where filled to the limit.

I know it's 'recognised' that in the US everything is 'bigger, better and other-worldly'. However, your Buffalo's have wings?!!!

As an aside, aside from the HRC, I can't suggest anywhere else in Amsterdam anyway, where you'd find buffalo wings.

As a recommendation for really GREAT burgers however, I'd suggest Burger Bar at Kolksteeg 2 (between the Damrak and the NZ Voorburgwal, just off the Nieuwendijk), SERIOUSLY good, cooked to order REAL beef burgers.

Whilst a lot of Dutch people are fascinated by Americana, they seldom replicate it too well. There's a 'traditional' diner in Purmerend called "Caddy's Diner". All the twee off-the-shelf slants on Americana that you'd expect; enamelled Coke advertising signs, non-operative booth-by-booth juke boxes, etc., but the food ... atrocious. I met the owner once and enquired why the food didn't taste that good. She explained that when they opened, they employed a US chef but the Dutch clients didn't like the food, so it's now been adopted to the Dutch pallete with Dutch kitchen staff!

I was a wee bit spoilt in my upbringing. I lived near Aberdeen, the oil-drilling capital of Europe, so, with the ingress of US Oil personnel and executives a few "American Diners" sprung up. The food (and portions) was truly American, and truly wonderful. What price a HUGE bowl of steaming Radar's Chilli Con Carne now? sad.gif

Unlike another McDonald's, the Dutch could really use a buffalo style wings restaurant. In Amsterdam or any other city, I think the Dutch would like it very much. Many people say that the dutch don't like spicy food but why is sambal so popular? HMMMMM, I'm hungry just thinking about. Here in Colorado we have Buffalo Wild Wings. Their sauces range from very mild to super hot and I think there are over 15 different varieties to choose from. My favorite is the Garlic Parmesan... oh, I mean the Spicy Habenero... oh, I mean the Caribbean Jerk... oh, shoot there's too many tasty sauces to choose from!

Are you Dutch, or have you lived here? I'm just curious because this is the second topic where you said 'the Dutch WILL like it'. Wickerman already said, every world cuisine that set up here has to adapt to the dutch pallete and if it doesn't then it will be bankrupt (read any topic on 'Looking for a good <country> restaurant). You cannot impose your 'normal' on a set of people who have their own 'normaal'. Starbucks only has stores inside the airports. Marks and Spencers (huge/well established British chain) withdrew all their shops because the Dutch didn't go there. There aren't enough expats to keep all these ventures afloat, not even in Amsterdam, if the Dutch don't take to it.

If you are going to come out here, bring with you a box full of all your favourite sauces ready to home cook because I very much doubt you will find the culinary gems you are hoping for once you are here. huh.gif Otherwise, get used to mashed potato with assorted mashed-in veg.

I made my own when I was jonesing not too long ago, and my dutchie didn't like them at all (only thing I've introduced to him that he hasn't liked so far...)! I'll admit, I made them a bit too hot, even for my own taste, but dang, they tasted good! The house stunk like Tabasco for a day, but hey! That's the price you have to pay sometimes! lol

you can email me at kelt_queen@hotmail.com if you want a tasty recipe. easy too! AND I found everything I needed at the local Plus! =)

Again, no use in telling us how great things are in Colorado - what is the point? Posters on this thread know what good Buffalo Wings should be, and are simply trying to find out if you can get them here. I could rant on about how good they are in Boston, New York, and San Francisco. Even Dublin and London. The point\question is "Are they available here?".
