I used to buy English food at Eischoltz on Leidsestraat, but over the last few months I've been a Thomas Green's customer - A move I thoroughly recommend, for price, selection, and less out-of-date food! However, I heard from a couple of people that there's a place near the Overtoom that's better again - they knew how to get there themselves, but couldn't tell me the exact street or name of the shop. Can anyone please help with the name and address of this place?

THE BRITISH GENERAL STORES,
1E. CONSTANTIJN HUYGENSSTRAAT 94
1054 BX AMSTERDAM

It's in the corner of the 1e Constantijn Huygenstraat with the Overtoom, on the 1e Constantijn Huygenstraat. I've bought some stuff from this store and it was actually better than Eicholz, in terms of price and availability of products. And the lady that runs the place is very pleasant, which is an added bonus.

I go there quite often, I sometimes get bottles of Barley Wine and the lady always tells me how nice it is with real Lime!

I shop at 3 of the English shops in Amsterdam because they all have different qualities Thomas green for fish items the british shop for cheapness vinegar 1:25 Euro, mint sauce for the same etc. Arkwrights for Sausages and convenience. The british shop is the cheapest of them all on the products they sell

British General Store often has them in the freezer so ask for them - Thomas Green's also has some in their freezers and they are also available at Kingalsmarkt in Amstelveen (but are kind of crap and overpriced).....They cost a few euros for a pack that in the UK would cost 30p but sometimes ya just gotta have yer crumpets - smothered in butter or cheese preferably ;-) Damn...must get some tomorrow...

If you're willing to make a trek to Leiden you can get fresh crumpets...if you act fast. They bring them in at the beginning of the week, and are usually sold out by Saturday:

Prices are good for other foodstuffs too...

Lynne (British General Stores) is an absolute gem. In the Amsterdam expat 'scene' she's somewhat an instituition! The shop is great for dried, tinned or packaged foods, greetings cards, etc. and always a cheery, welcoming feeling.

Thomas Green is great for their choice of frozen/chilled products but extremely expensive. A couple of years back they had boxes of After Eights sitting by the till, with a sign saying "Now Only 3.50 Euro". I pointed out you can get After Eights from Albert Heijn for "only" 1.50 Euro! Bear in mind, Thomas Green is a franchise - quite why ANYONE would take a franchise on a British food store kind of escapes me! - so, franchising costs have to be added to the bottom line.

Arkwrights - judged on my one and only visit/bad experience of this 'store' - is a REAL "No Go". The staff were unfriendly. The chocolate bars I bought were ALL 'blushed' through exposure to the summer heat. Many of the other items I bought were out of date.

Visited Eischoltz once - to buy Irn Bru - HOW *^%!+@ MUCH?!!!

Al's Plaice on Nieuwendijk/Haarlemeerdijk used to sell large bottles of Vimto/Tizer/Irn Bru, etc. at realistic and affordable prices. Don't know if it still does, since it's takeover as Ali's Plaice, as I only went once after 'ever friendly' Al sold out and the quality of my fish and chips was appalling!

There's also Kingsalmarkt in Amstelveen, they have British, US and oriental foods. They're open MWTHFS
