This story really hit me hard, I'm a mom with two young girls not much younger than this little girl and the thought that either of them being in that situation is horrifying to me. It doesn't suprise me though that this has happened, children today are being asked to grow up way too fast and be more adult without being given the necessary tools or time to mature to handle the various garbage thrown at them. Parents are less involved in their childrens lives, often ignoring them and what they may be doing.

I look at the amount and type of stuff marketed towards kids today and most of it is adult items scaled down. I may be a mean mom because I refuse to let my girls dress and wear enough make up to look like hookers and my son is abused because I won't let him dress and act like a thug, nor do I buy them every gadget that comes along. I look at the number of parents that cave to their childrens demands or feel they "have" to get the latest new gimmick on the market for their child (heaven forbid that little Johnny goes without the latest psp game etc) but don't spend any quality time with them. I'm sure you all have seen the kids cursing their parents and bossing them around and the parents just give in.

My children are given age appropriate chores to do around the house and are expected to do their school work (if they are having problems then either their father or I will take the time to sit down and help them - mind you I said "help" not do it for them) to earn pocket money. They can save up for various things they want. We talk with our children about what is going on in their lives, the problems they may be having etc and hopefully they are learning to make better decisions for themselves.

I know that as they get older my influence over them will decrease and their peers will increase and something like this happening is a possibility but I hope that they will have the strength to not follow what others are doing and do what is right for them.
