OH MY!!! I just re-read everything I could find on the ind.nl website. I am totally confused- As a US citizen, I am not required to have an MVV to enter the country. I was under the impression we had to report to alien police within 3 days-- and apply for residence permit. It is our intention to stay for more than 3 months.

But, the following sounds like I need to have one to apply for residence permit.
Please note: If you do not have an MVV
but, according to the rules, you do need
one, your application for a residence
permit will be refused. If this happens
you will have to leave the Netherlands,
unless, in the opinion of the IND, there
are special circumstances which mean
you do not have to apply for an MVV in
your own country. Under certain
conditions you may be exempted from
having to obtain an MVV. If this is the
case you should apply for your
residence permit using the form
‘Application for a residence permit
without an MVV or change in purpose
of stay’.

The key is the phrase "...but, according to the rules, you do need one".
US citizens don't need one so you're ok.

Occasionally US citizens do get an MVV so that they can start work while waiting for the res permit to me approved, but I'm not sure under what circumstances that applies. Maybe you could post in Legal for opinions of the lawyers who sometimes pop in there.

An MVV is an entry visa. That is all. Americans don't need one whether you want to move here or visit for three months.

A residence permit is what everybody needs to stay here longer than three months. But if you go to the gemeente house with all your apostilled documents and try to apply for one, you will have to give one of the reasons listed on the Residence Wizard. There are no other options.

MVVs are for citizens of "non-western" countries.

But as we've told you numerous times, your reasons for coming here ARE NOT legally recognized by the IND. This situation is NOT employment and as an unpaid lecturer, does NOT fall under the kennis migrant scheme.

I have heard of teacher exchanges. In fact, there is one happening later this year at the IDCollege I attend, but it's only for 2 weeks.

You're going to uproot your entire family for nothing, to be sent home after 3 months with the possibility of being barred from the ENTIRE EU for 5 years or more??? Because that's what is going to happen if you and your entire family get deported.

Why do you want to move to amsterdam?
If it is because you are an escort, it really doesn't improve your chances to stay legally than going to any other EU country.
