Hi, I'm a 30-yrs old French Canadian living in Antwerp. I came here for my work a year ago and I do enjoy the new lifestyle but I miss hearing French with a Quebec accent or Canadian English. As my phone bills are remaining at ridiculously high levels, I tough it would be better to find fellow Canadians to share a beer with. Anyone up for a drink and complaining about the rain / lack of French & English books / difficulty of learning Dutch... ?

Hey girlie!
I am a Nova Scotian, anlgophone (yes, complete with the East Coast accent!!)...bilingual french (although my aural comporehension is much better then my written or spoken french)!! I am tryng DAMNED hard to get to Antwerpen! I was there in October, looking for work and fell completely in love! It's really sad to be leaving Canada...but I'd sure like to meet people once I am there! I'm looking desperately hard for work that will sponsor me...any suggestions? I'd like to relocate in January.

For what I have been told, finding work in Antwerp is not the easiest thing. Most Flemish Belgians have university degrees and have extensive language skills (my assistant speaks 4 languages fluently while my boyfriend speaks 5 and they both find it normal). Unemployment in Belgium is high and labour laws are stiff so most people stick to their jobs once they get a good one. I've been warned that job hunting is a 6 to 9 month process for a financial analysis with good credentials and 5-10 years of experience. The same person would find work within 3 months in Montreal or Toronto. This should give you an idea.

If you don't speak Flemish, you may be better trying your luck in Brussels where most multinationals are located. I know of a few people you live in Antwerp and work in Brussels. If you are lucky to work near a large train station in Brussels you can do the commute in circa 45 min.

Sorry I can't be of more help but I got my job through an internal transfer so I did not need to look for a job in Antwerp.

Good luck,

Hello Girlie (and other fellow Canadians):

I just moved to Antwerp from Canada three weeks ago and would love to meet with any/all of you at some point for a beer. My partner is Belgian and was transferred back here. So far, I love it! Have been here many times before!

I want to make some new friends so please, send me an email if you want to meet. My french is not very good (western Canadian all of my life), so please excuse me if I can only converse intelligently in English.

Hoping to hear from someone...

Cheers,
Danette

I am a Canadian as well; Vancouver is my home town however I have lived in Montreal Quebec as well. I have been here for one year and have spent most of my time working so I am eager to meet some Canadians to share a beer and talk about back home a little. We can even talk about hockey (Ice Hockey)<img src="../images/emoticons/ysmile.gif">

I live on the river in the city of Antwerp
