Strongly recommend anyone AVOIDS India Roti Room in 1e Oosterparkstraat like the plague ...

Terrible food. Pakora like rubber ... Chicken Tandoori, dry and tasteless and accompanied with a soft boiled potato and pea curry (equally flavourless), plain rice and a Peshwari that had so much granulated sugar pouring out of it would have been better described as a dessert.

I know some where even worse! Sumangali, in Alkmaar serves MICROWAVED naan and samosas! The prawn vindaloo, although listed as "zeer pittig" is just prawns cooked in an oily, flavourless sauce, and the so-called saffron rice is just tumeric colored Basmati.

Unattentive staff, slow service, dirty bathrooms. A perfect place to contract food poisoning.

You seem to be in the minority!

I met some tourists in Amsterdam a couple of months back, including one with Pakistani parentage. I suggested they visit on the Friday night, and on the Saturday I met them when they'd been joined by several other friends ... they asked me to book the Balti House again for them as they ALL were highly-impressed.

I also refered a friend who was visiting Amsterdam with an Indian friend and they had a similar viewpoint.

It's not a bad restaurant but I personally (hence the 'imho' in my post) feel the place is overrated. It's quite expensive (aren't they all though!), service is ok but no better and the food is upto a good standard but no better.

I eat curries fairly regularly but rarely at the Balti House these days.

I second loui the lips about the Balti House. I do not think it's a bad restaurant, however I don't feel it's anything to write home about. I am a fan of indian food and have tried tens of indian restaurants in the NL and the rest of the world. Balti house is ok - but not special. I don't think that it's expensive on the Dutch scale. It's normal. I have eaten there at least 3 times. That's enough - and I don't plan to come back in the near future.

Best of India is indeed disgusting - I tried their food and it is BAD!

Balraj Restaurant in the Jordan is nice - nothing special again... but quite reasonable (a little cheaper then the Balti House)- but the food is tasty and nice.

Balti House is the best in my (and many friends) opinions, but for home delivery, Dosa on Overtoom is pretty good. I have tried several Indian home delivery restaurants and every time, the chicken tastes off.....I finally tried Dosa and will never order from another place again for home delivery Indian food. The chicken's very fresh-their samosas are great-rice is nice- and their sauces very creamy and nice...you can also convienently order on thuisbezorg.nl

You also have to take into account that we are in Amsterdam- finding a restaurant that's even halfway acceptable is quite a find! But I have friends from all over the world who love Balti House and when they visit, always ask when we're going there.

For delivery, also try Nheet tu Dhaba (spelling is probably way off) on the Overtoom. Heartily recommended.

If one wants to venture outside Amsterdam, I thought that Taste of India on Gedempte Oude Gracht in Haarlem was better than Balti House (better service too).

I agree with the comments here, I have tried several home delivery places from the thuisbezorg.nl site and they ahve all been dreadful - ok starters, appallingly bad main courses. With the exception of DOSA. Everything from there was very good, well cooked and full of flavour.

I disagree with the first comments on this thread. I have eaten at the Roti Room on a number of occassions as it is local to me. I have found the food to be excellent value and the service and attitude to be fantastic. A meal for 2 with a couple of beers each and a brandy for myself came to less than 40euros last time i was there. They offered more of everything we ate for free if we wanted it. It may no be as good as Indian food gets but a the price it is certainly value for money. The owner is also a character who understands hospitality.

The Balti house on the other hand is all front and high prices imho. Main courses are 15 euros and up which for an Indian restaurant is pretty expensive. Their Balti chicken was white in the inside which is tells me that is was not cooked in the Balti style. At the prices they charge and considering that its their theme ...well what can you say!

Shivas off Rembrandtplein is my favourite however. Its cheap, cheerful and very good quality. They have a fish curry disk that is exceptional. I have not been to Gandhis on the Damrak but I have been told by lots of people that what is lacks in decor it makes up for in food. Anyone been there?

We have only used one indian restaurant and it is near westermarkt opposite the tram stop. We have found the food to be great. I go and collect but they do delivery. Every time i've been there it is full and only maybe 1 table available. I think that speaks for itself
