Hi, my partner and I are moving from North Carolina to Amsterdam for work. We want to ship a lot of our books and clothing (no furniture or big-ticket items, though), and are unsure of what shipping company to use. Does anyone recommend a particular company, or have advice about shipping overseas in general?
For example: how much can we expect to be charged, how long will it take, does stuff get broken / stolen a lot, etc?
Any input would be appreciated.
Thank you.

I took most of my stuff on the plane with me. You can pay 150 USD to bring an extra bag (over 2 checked) up to 70 pounds. I'm shipping via FeEx 3 boxes with my sports gear (scuba, ski, boarding etc). I was able to get a 35% discount also which helped out. It was 400 I believe out the door my 3 boxes where over 150 pounds I beleive. I am doing this right now actually since I moved here about a week ago. Another way is to find someone shipping a car and fill it up (yes migth be hard to find someone) however it cost 900 USD to ship a car and doesn't matter the weight.

Let me double check. The port was in New Jersey. I called the dealership where I bought my Audi and they put me in contact with someone. I will double check but if I can not find it call an US Audi dealer and ask them about shipping.

Someone who recently moved from US to Canada recommended this link: http://www.intlmovers.com/vervolg2.asp?inittype=removal

I checked it out, and it allows you to input information about your move (from where, to where), what stuff your shipping, dates, and any other special needs.

After filling this out, your info is given to several companies that match your requests, who get back to you within a day with a quote.

This seems helpful, I think I will use it, and if you're shipping a car you may want to check it out too.

I know a few expats and they told me that shipping by national courier is the cheapest. You might want to check it out.
