Uproar in Belgium over Weatherwoman in Burka!

BRUSSEL - In België is ophef ontstaan over de presentatie van het weerbericht op Télé Bruxelles dinsdag door een vrouw in een boerka.

Brussels - There was an uproar in Belguim over the presentation of a weather report on Tele Bruxelles on Tuesday by a woman dressed in a Burka.

Apparently she was reading the weather report and all you could see was her eyes! ph34r.gif

I think it's really cool. Too many weather presenters are trying to big themselves up as t.v. 'personalities'. All I want to know is what the weather is going to be like, I don't need to hear their stupid jokes.

So for that reason I think we need more Burkhas on TV.

BTW, she didn't wear a Burqa but a Niqab, a substantial difference! She didn't do a good job though as her articulation was bad. As a "bonus", I didn't like the wet circle her breath made on the veil around her mouth. That was rather ugly in my opinion. I suppose she was nervous...

I was wondering about that, I've never seen a Burqa worn anywhere in Western Europe. Burqas are worn only in Afghanistan, parts of Pakistan and Northern India.

The TV company get one person a day off the street to read the weather, and one day they happened to pick someone wearing a Niqab or an Abaya. You have to wonder about the mentality of people who get upset about that.

How sad and small would your life have to be for something so insignificant like that to make you so angry?

Couldn't agree more but it does seem symptomatic of the anti-foreigner sentiment that pervades NL at the moment, Burqa (or equivalent)=Bad, sad indeed...

Please Porkchop, tell us with at least a shred of evidence what the size of a country might have to do with the mind of the people living in it? I fail to see any connection and to be honest I'm convinced there is no relationship at all. Any scientist woluld laugh at such an assumption. However, what I do see daily is, the bigger the country, the more frequently it thinks it is right and the "small" countries/ people/minorities are "wrong". It is not difficult to find many examples of that arrogant ( and most of the time also "ignorant") attitude, not even in Australia and New Zealand. Look for example at the treatment of Aboriginals and Maoris not so long ago (and still not entirely to their satisfaction).

I think you'll find he was being ironic, Emilio.

I'm sorry for not detecting any irony there. I think that's a "post partum" explanation... oh well, no harm done!

Thanks TPC! Bloody heck, I thought Emilio had a bit more humour in him than that although I do remember the last time we had cross words he was a tad quick to jump on me...it's not a very good social grace IMHO.

We're not discussing obstetrics here. If you mean "After the event" it's still incorrect because TPC's the one providing the explanation not me (although he is bang on wink.gif )

It's about this stage in the thread that somebody usually mentions the Allanis Morrissette song 'Ironic' - and the fact that the only ironic thing about the entire song was that the girl who wrote the lyrics clearly doesn't know what the word 'ironic' means.

So I just did.

Allanis who? Ooops sorry I was just being ironic rolleyes.gif I must say (speaking as an old fart) that there's appears to be a plethora of rock wannabe's which come and go as regularly as the sun rises and sets, Macie Gray anyone? I'm really sticking my neck out here and saying that Amy Winehouse will go much the same way.

I've seen a few women completely covered in a black cloak from head to foot, some wearing sunglasses, well, I assume they were women anyway, following their male partners. Of course if they were gay it was a good way to hide it. biggrin.gif

"I've seen a few women completely covered in a black cloak from head to foot..."

So they weren't wearing Burkhas then, they were probably wearing Abayas. The Burkha is almost invariably royal blue.

Yes TPC I know, I just wasn't sure of the name, though I see little difference if the person wearing it decides to go for the full covering... kind of like the difference between different dresses/trousers, they are still dresses/trousers.

Here's one for working in hospitals... though you might think you were highly contagious. biggrin.gif
