Why don't you get an UK license if you live in the UK? I think you can drive with an UK one on the continent.

But here in The Netherlands you can exhange your SA one here if you have the 30% tax rule, otherwise you will have to go for lessons and a test through a driving school.

You need to be resident of Great Britain

For South African driving licence
Your South African driving licence that is a part of a book of life, will need to be accompanied by a letter of authority from the South African licensing authority. The licence part will be stamped to confirm the exchange and the book will be returned to you. If you are exchanging your South African photocard driving licence, this will be returned to the South African licensing authority

Is this something new? I gave my old SA ID book and a week later got it back with a Dutch licence. No stamps in it. No letter had to accompany it. My only problem was that I am not registered in NL as an SA citizen and as such, needed further documentation as my licence had been issued from a country that was 'not my own'. Note also that, with a 30% ruling, all family members (partner and children) can also just swap them.
