I'm 22 weeks pregnant, in Gent Belgium. I'm from Canada, and spent a good portion of my life in the US. I'm wondering if it's all in my head or if the doctors really do seem different here?
I've been seeing a gyno. since 3 months, but I have to admit I can't stand her. She seems cold, stand off-ish and I seem to spend less than 5 minutes in her office each visit. I may have always been lucky, but despite the fact that I have had some real health issues in my time and the fact that healthcare is government based in canada, I have always had doctors that took the time to explain certain issues and make you feel safe in their hands. Less rantingly, is there any difference in hospital care in Belgium vs. Canada/US? As this is my first pregnancy i'm not sure what that would be, but does anyone know what I should be expecting? Thanks ^^ |

I can recommend Cathy Van Gaever at AZ Maria Middelares - she is a fantastic Gynae - Unfortunately I had a miscarriage at 9 weeks but she was wonderful with me and I will go straight back to her again when I get pregnant again. I think the health service here is excellent - I come from teh UK where it is good but I think it is better here. I think maybe it is a personality thing you have encountered. If you can, try Cathy. And good luck with everything! |

Hi!
Congratulations! You are definately just with the wrong doc. I have been going to the gynaes at Jan Palfijn in Gent, and they have offices in Aalter, for IVF, and they have been nothing but excellent. They explain everything, you are never rushed in an appointment and they care. There is both a male & female gynae so you have the choice. Find a doc you like, because you need someone you trust. Anyway, best of luck with your pregnancy. |

Congrats!!
I agree, you may have the wrong doctor. There are a lot of great doctors in Belgium. I am sure if you go to the next one. You will find the TLC,your are looking for. I lived in Belgium for 21 years and always had great experience. My daughter is a living proof, and the hospital was a Holiday Inn,trust me. 5 days of pampering, lol. There is nothing to be worried about. |

hello,
I agree with previous posters that you are probably just not as compatible with your doctor as you would have liked - this happens, so you just have to find one that you feel secure with... it is absolutely necessary that you are happy with your doctor, and since you have the choice, why not find a better one? I'm 22 weeks pregnant with my first as well, living in Brussels, and went through 3 doctors before settling on the one I am seeing now, so I understand how important it is! Good luck with the doctor-shopping! I would like, if I may, to ask a question myself: does anyone know of pregnant expat women groupings, to socialise, exchange info, etc? I would love to meet other pregnant expats living in Brussels, and it doesn't seem so easy... anyone interested in starting such a group? any ideas would be welcome. Thanks! |
